Playmodes
Playmodes is an audiovisual research studio based around Barcelona.
A hybrid team of engineers, musicians and designers, they work with self-made digital technologies that breathe life into original light and sound instruments. This digital luthierism has led them to apply their creativity to immersive installations, scenography or projection mapping, in a journey outside the square boundaries of traditional screens, colonizing space by unfolding pixels across architectural spaces.
Their deep interest in the relationships between visual and auditory phenomena, as well as their skills in electronic music composition, leds Playmodes to create projects where sound and image are treated as a single matter. In most of their projects, the same streams of data generate both audio and visuals through safe-made softwares. Concepts like realtime image sonification, or audio visualization are common on their last works, giving form to visual music artworks which drive the audience into strong synaesthetic perceptions.
Passionate about art, design, maths, physics, code, cymatics and nature, they share all these passions by giving lectures and workshops in universities, schools or institutions. Being part of a global network of creative coders and artists, they collaborate with people from around the world to deliver high quality and innovative projects, both in the cultural or commercial spectrum.
In recent years Playmodes has developed projects for light festivals across the world (Fête des Lumieres, Signal, LlumBCN, Mapping Festival, LIT Bogotá, Chartres en Lumiêre…), for electronic music events (Sónar, Mira, LEV, DGTL…), for art institutions and festivals (Macau Arts Festival, In Between Time…), have published their sound works on electronic music Labels («Plegat» Discontinu records) and have been awarded with international distinctions of the New Media field (Ars Electronica Honorary mention, LAUS, Visual music Awards…)
